Dental Hygiene at Nettles Clinic

Marion Beal is a GDC-registered dental hygienist (registration number 4454) and BSDHT member with over 30 years of clinical experience. Nettles Clinic is one of only two certified GBT practices in the Wivelsfield Green and Haywards Heath area, and is listed on the official EMS GBT Practice Finder.

Every appointment is up to 60 minutes long, with 10 additional minutes allocated for first visits. That is approximately double the time most dental practices allocate, which means Marion is never rushed, every area of the mouth is assessed thoroughly, and patients leave with a level of clean that standard hygiene appointments rarely achieve. You will always see Marion, and only Marion, at every visit.

Nettles Clinic is also registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Guided Biofilm Therapy, or GBT, is a clinically proven dental hygiene protocol that uses a combination of biofilm disclosure, Airflow technology, and specialised powder to remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains more thoroughly and comfortably than traditional scaling alone.

Unlike conventional cleaning, GBT begins by applying a disclosing dye to the teeth. This makes biofilm, the bacterial layer responsible for decay and gum disease, visible so that nothing is missed during treatment. The Airflow handpiece then removes the disclosed biofilm using a fine stream of warm water and Airflow powder, before any remaining calculus is addressed. The result is a more precise clean that protects healthy tissue and reduces discomfort throughout.

GBT is suitable for natural teeth, dental implants, crowns, bridges, veneers, and orthodontic braces, as well as the tongue and gum tissue.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

assignment

Step 1: Assessment and Disclosure

Marion begins with a full oral health assessment, then applies a disclosing dye to make biofilm visible on the teeth and gums. This guides every step of treatment that follows.

Step 2: Airflow Cleaning

Using the Airflow Prophylaxis Master, Marion removes disclosed biofilm with warm water and Airflow powder, including from subgingival pockets where gum disease begins. Any remaining calculus is then carefully removed.

Step 3: Finishing and Aftercare

GBT Air Foam is applied to the tooth surfaces at the end of your appointment, providing a smooth finish and protection while your oral microbiome rebalances. Marion will advise on any home care adjustments based on what she observed during treatment.

Step 4: Wellness Add-Ons

Patients who experience dental anxiety, TMJ issues, stress, or headaches may wish to add ear acupuncture to their appointment for an additional £25.

What Patients Commonly Notice

Cleaner baseline between visits Patients who attend regular GBT appointments often find that plaque builds up less quickly over time, as the tooth surfaces are left in better condition after each clean.

Reduced gum sensitivity and bleeding Thorough removal of subgingival biofilm reduces bacterial load at the gum line, which often results in healthier, less reactive gum tissue within a few appointments.

Earlier detection of potential issues The disclosure step reveals areas of concern that are invisible to the naked eye, allowing Marion to flag early signs of decay, calculus accumulation, or gum inflammation before they progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. GBT is a full clinical protocol, not just a polishing treatment. It includes biofilm disclosure, Airflow cleaning, targeted calculus removal, and finishing with Air Foam. Standalone Airflow polishing skips the disclosure step, which means biofilm and early calculus can be missed.

Most patients benefit from appointments every three to four months, though Marion will recommend a frequency based on your individual oral health needs. Patients with gum disease or a history of heavy calculus buildup may be advised to attend more frequently initially.

Appointments at Nettles Clinic are up to 60 minutes long (up to 70 for a first visit), compared to the 20 to 30 minutes typically allocated in a busy dental practice. You see the same practitioner at every visit, and Marion uses the full GBT protocol with EMS Airflow equipment and powder, including in gum pockets where disease begins.

GBT is designed to be gentler than traditional scaling. The Airflow powder is applied with warm water at a comfortable pressure, and the disclosure step means only affected areas are treated. Patients with sensitive gums or dental anxiety generally find it more comfortable than conventional cleaning.
